Donald Trump released a potentially revealing statement on Truth Social as news broke on Tuesday that authorities in Fulton County, Georgia, are set to make a decision on charges against several members of his inner circle – including potentially Mr. Trump himself.
The ex-president, out of nowhere, made his now infamous January 2, 2021 appeal to Georgian Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in which he instructed the state’s chief election officer to ‘find’ more than 11 000 votes he would have needed to overtake Joe Biden. total as is.
“My phone call to the Georgia Secretary of State, and a second call that Marxists, Communists, Racists and RINOS don’t even want to talk about, were ‘PERFECT’ calls. Many people, including lawyers from both sides, were knowingly online. I was protesting a rigged and stolen election, which proves it was,” the former president said.
He went on to reaffirm a number of completely false claims about his Georgia vote total: “I won Georgia by a wide margin, but I only needed a small number of votes out of that total number. They cheated in a number of ways, including stuffed ballots, ALL Caught LIVE ON TAPE.
And then he asked why Mr Raffensperger or others on the call refused to say at the time that his instructions to the chief election officer had been improper.
“[H]oh, not a single person said during the call that i acted inappropriately, or made a statement of protest at what i said and then hung up the phone[?]asked the ex-president. “Not one, even with so many opposing people, lawyers and others online. NO REASSEMBLY at all.
That seems like a weak defense for his actions, which coincidentally (or may not) come just as Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis says his office’s decision on the criminal charges stemming from of this phone call and other efforts by the Trump campaign to nullify the election results in the state is “imminent”.
She added in a statement picked up by news agencies that “several” defendants could be charged as part of the investigation. Many members of Mr Trump’s former legal team, including former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, were known to be potential targets of the investigation.
The House of Representatives select committee investigating Jan. 6 had previously recommended that the former president be indicted on multiple criminal charges stemming from the attack on Congress, but the Justice Department investigation has yet to result in a decision. no charges against Mr. Trump or his entourage.
