A teenage girl who achieved her goal of hiking all 48 peaks in a US state before she turned 20 has been found frozen to death on a trail.

Emily Sotelo, 19, went on a solo hike last Sunday morning and did not return as her family waited. The body of Sotelo, whose 20th birthday was this week, was found on the northwest side of Mount Lafayette in New Hampshire on Wednesday.

Rescuers recovered his body after a three-day search in freezing temperatures. Friends paying tribute to her said she had achieved her hiking goal, but had a tragic end.

“She did the three peaks she wanted and unfortunately on the descent she missed the bend which is hard to find in windy weather or just in general,” her hiker friend Brian Garvey said, according to the Daily Mail .

“It has happened before in the exact same area where she went off the track in 2021.

“Luckily these guys got away with unfreezing their cell phones under their armpit and SAR (search and rescue) found them before they froze.”

Sotelo’s mother dropped her off on a trail at Lafayette Place Campground in Franconia. She planned to climb Mount Lafayette, Haystack and Flume in the White Mountains, police said.

Search and rescue teams came out in search of Sotelo on Sunday evening when temperatures on the ridge dropped to around zero degrees.

“Due to severe weather conditions, a search began Sunday evening and (throughout) the night,” the Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division and Operation Game Thief said Wednesday. “Researchers were hampered by high winds, cold temperatures and blowing snow.”

On Tuesday, researchers found traces and some of Sotelo’s belongings at the Lafayette Brook spring. They discovered his body Wednesday morning. His cause of death has not yet been revealed.

A hiker who knew Sotelo, Jessie Callaghan, described her as “sweet and so happy to be in the woods.”

“She was young and ready for anything,” Callaghan wrote on Facebook.
