The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) announced on Thursday (November 24th) that three of its staff had died after the authority vehicle they were traveling in was involved in an accident along the southern bypass of Eldoret near Sosiani Bridge.

The authority noted that the trio were among six people who died in the accident, which occurred on the evening of Wednesday, November 23 at 6:30 p.m.

The other three victims were the driver of a public service vehicle (PSV) and his two passengers.

The authority said that a tractor loaded with a sheller suddenly left a service road causing confusion for the two drivers – that of the KURA vehicle as well as that of the PSV.

“Early eyewitness information confirms that a tractor loaded with a Sheller suddenly veered off a feeder road and caused confusion and panic among the two drivers, resulting in a head-on collision.

“Traffic police and members of the public managed to transport the injured to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. Six lives were sadly lost in this accident, three of them being our staff and three others being the driver and passengers of the public service vehicle heading towards Kitale,” reads a statement signed by the Managing Director of KURA, John Cheboi.

KURA said authorities have contacted the families of those who died as investigations into the incident continue.

“We express our condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the bereaved and pray to God for strength during this difficult time.

“We will continue to update the public as police investigate and search for the owner of the tractor that disappeared from the scene,” the statement added.

The 14-seater matatu involved in the crash was en route to Kitale from Nairobi.

In an address to the press, Uasin Gishu Police Commander Ayub Gitonga noted that matatu and parastatal drivers were among those killed on impact.

The wreckage of the vehicles was towed to the nearby Yamumbi police station.
