A Somali military court has sentenced to death a police officer convicted of killing a civilian following an argument over a lighter.

Mohamed Abdulkadir Sheikh Ibrahim, a junior officer serving in the South West, one of Somalia’s five federal member states, was sentenced to firing squad for the murder he committed in April.

Ibrahim, who served in the police force in the town of Afgoye, 30 km southwest of Mogadishu, was found guilty by the court of the murder of Abdifatah Abdullahi Ali, a shopkeeper, on April 25, 2022.

Ibrahim allegedly stabbed Ali to death after the two argued over a lighter.

Firing squad

Ali’s relatives were present at the military court when Ibrahim was sentenced to face a firing squad by Major Mohamed Abdi Mumin.

The Afgoye district community has been stunned by incidents in which residents are being killed in disputes over items worth around 10,000 Somali shillings (less than half a US dollar).

In recent incidents, a man killed another for a cigarette while another was killed for a cup of tea.

However, as Somalia’s reconstruction continues, people say killings by members of the armed forces have decreased.
