Wales have been dealt a blow just two days before their World Cup opener against the United States as midfielder Joe Allen is expected to miss the game as he recovers after a hamstring injury.

Allen hasn’t played a game since September 17 and, according to the Times, he is “losing his battle” to be ready on Monday, with Friday’s battle against Iran also in question.

The 32-year-old has been training on his own in a bid to regain his health for Wales’ first appearance in a tournament since 1958.

The Swansea City midfielder has made 72 appearances for his country, and manager Rob Page admitted after his side’s announcement he was picking a player less than 100 per cent.

“We give him every chance to be fit,” he said.

“There was no way I wouldn’t name him in the 26. He’s on the grass.

“He is progressing the way we want and we will give him every chance to be fit for the first game.

“I phoned him a few days ago to tell him he was in 26 just to take that pressure off him.

“If he is fit, he plays. He’s huge for the way I play and the success we’ve had.

“He also has a lot of experience in tournament football so he knows the game inside out and that’s invaluable.” That’s why I throw everything on it.

Wales will face the USMNT on Monday to kick off their tournament.
