A court has seen footage of when a drunken patron of a Lancashire nursing home crashed his car outside a leisure centre.

Dean Kennedy was filmed driving his Volkswagen Golf near The Green in Darwen at around 4.30am on Wednesday August 24 this year. The camera, positioned on a building in Market Street, timed Kennedy’s VW driving past the Darwen Leisure Center towards Blackburn.

As Kennedy’s car reached the edge of camera range, the Golf is seen crashing head-on into the railings on the opposite side of the A666. Airbags were deployed and after shocked bystanders stopped to help police and paramedics were called to the scene.

At Blackburn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday November 17, Kennedy, 32, of Woodfield Close in Blackburn, pleaded guilty to driving with excessive alcohol. The court heard a blood sample was taken when Kennedy was taken to hospital, which revealed he had just under twice the legal limit to drive.

Prosecutor Sameena Chaudhry played a clip of the crash to magistrates and said: “In the early hours of the morning police were called to a report of a road traffic accident outside Darwen Leisure Centre. The vehicle was level on both lanes of the road.

“He said he drank two pints. He articulated his words badly. Eyewitnesses said the car was seen swerving into the lane.”

Representing himself, Kennedy described himself as “a responsible person.” He added: “I run a retirement home.”

Kennedy was fined £369 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £148 plus court costs of £85. He was also banned from driving for 17 months.
