The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have announced a 19-member squad for the upcoming seven-game T20I series in Pakistan as part of what will be a historic tour for the Lions. The last time England toured Pakistan was in 2005-06 and the England squad will return for a three-Test series after the 2022 T20 World Cup.
The England squad were supposed to tour Pakistan last year but pulled out of the tour for security reasons after New Zealand canceled their tour on the day they were supposed to play the first ODI vs Pakistan.
However, this time the England board have pledged to play seven T20Is first which will be part of their preparations for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, but the squad that has been announced for the T20Is Pakistani lacks big names.
Big names Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow missing from Pakistan T20Is
Jos Buttler will lead the team with Moeen Ali as assistant for the seven T20Is which will be played in Karachi and Lahore from September 20 to October 2, 2022. Four T20Is will be played in Karachi and the last three in Lahore.
Big names such as Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow were absent from the tour while Chris Jordan and Liam Livingstone were not considered due to their respective injuries. A big name that was dropped from the team was fly-half Jason Roy, who has long struggled with poor form.
The ECB said in its official statement: “Chris Jordan (finger) and Liam Livingstone (ankle) will continue their rehabilitation and will not tour Pakistan before the World Cup, but will remain on track to be fit for the tournament in Australia.
England captain Jos Buttler, who is recovering from a calf injury, will tour Pakistan but is expected to be available to play in the later stages of the seven-match series. In Buttler’s absence, Moeen Ali will serve as team captain.
Five uncapped players have also been announced by England in Jordan Cox, Tom Helm, Will Jacks and Luke Wood. The tour group will fly to Pakistan on September 14.
