He told his followers: “I still cannot calculate that my beloved wife, Joan, mother of our daughter @OliviaGrantedpassed away a year ago tonight.
‘Holding hands until her last earthly breath. Dance forever in my heart.
Grant and Washington had been together for 38 years and married for 34 before his death last year, aged 71after a battle with cancer.
The Withnail and I star confirmed the news of Washington’s death on social media last year, writing, “ONLY YOU!” Joan – Love of my Life & Giver of Life to our daughter Olivia.
“Our hearts are broken by the loss of your life last night. 35 years married and 38 together.
‘To be truly known and seen by you is your immeasurable gift. Don’t forget us, my dear Monkee-mine.
Washington was an esteemed dialect coach with nearly 40 years of experience, who had worked with the likes of Anne Hathaway, Emma Stone and Vanessa Redgrave.
She met Grant while teaching an accent session at the Actors Center in Covent Garden in November 1982, where the Loki actor ‘begged her to give me private singing lessons’ as he had recently emigrated from ‘Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) in Southern Africa.
Grant recalled that his price was £20 an hour, but he could “only afford £12”, which Washington agreed to on one condition.
He wrote: “She stared at me with her big monkey eyes and said, ‘Okay, but you’ll have to pay me back if you ever ‘make it’.
The couple went on to welcome a daughter together, Olivia, while Grant is also stepfather to Washington’s son Tom from his first marriage.
