Trump, MAGA Republicans angry because Biden speech hit target

Republicans are angry with President Biden’s speech in Philadelphia, in which he categorically declares that the American democratic experiment is in grave danger because of Donald Trump and the Republicans who remain allied with his political project.

So here’s a question for those Republicans: what exactly was wrong with Biden’s speech?

Many objections have been broad: Republicans say his speech

million, that it was Republicans as enemy.

In the coming days, these Republicans will retreat to safe spaces for right-wing media to rant without undergoing cross-examination. But when venturing into mainstream forums, they need to be pressed on the details.

Consider Biden’s most fundamental assertion about the MAGA-related GOP and democracy:

Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic.

MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution. They don’t believe in the rule of law. They do not recognize the will of the people. They refuse to accept the results of a free election.

Some Republicans insist that they respect the Constitution and the rule of law. But Biden carefully distinguished between MAGA and non-MAGA Republicans, throwing only the first in these terms.

The category of “MAGA Republicans” is vague. But we can certainly say that many of them — including members of Congress — have been broadly supportive of Trump’s efforts as president to reverse his electoral defeat.

This store The coup attempt included extraordinarily corrupt pressure on many government actors, including law enforcement, who flouted the rule of law on its face. This involved pressuring Vice President Mike Pence to violate his constitutional duty. Penny himself said he was being asked to betray the fundamental principles of constitutional democracy.

Many Republicans who are now professing indignation supported all this. A review of their own conduct proves Biden right.

They look at the crowd that stormed the United States Capitol on January 6, brutally attacking law enforcement, not as insurgents who put a dagger to the throat of our democracy, but they view them like patriots.

Biden went on to accuse “MAGA forces” of stoking “political violence.”

Republicans sometimes say that those who have committed violent crimes should be prosecuted. It may be sincere in some cases, but again, what Biden said just done apply to Trump and the MAGA wing of the GOP.

This week, Trump strongly suggested that if re-elected, he would forgive countless numbers of people who violently attacked the US Capitol to prevent a legitimately elected government from taking power. Trump also said he would apologize to the government, meaning the Jan. 6 defendants are persecuted victims. This did not catch the attention of most elected Republicans.

Meanwhile, other MAGA Republicans have actually referred to the Jan. 6 defendants as “political prisoners” or otherwise portrayed the rioters as patriots. Many continue to wave or actively conceal Trump’s own role in inciting this violence, implying that it may have been excessive but motivated by an underlying just cause.

Here’s more from Biden on MAGA:

They are working right now as I speak from state to state to empower supporters and cronies to decide elections in America, allowing election deniers to undermine democracy itself.

And they see their MAGA failure to stop a peaceful transfer of power after the 2020 elections as preparation for the 2022 and 2024 elections.

What part of this do Republicans deny?

Right now, dozens of Republicans are seeking checkpoints on the electoral machine, with Trump actively supporting them, while campaigning explicitly on their refusal to acknowledge that Biden was rightfully elected president. All that represents a threat to use the power of their offices to treat future Democratic election victories as subject to reversal.

And so, the openly declared intentions of Trump and these MAGA Republicans show that they are undeniably a threat to our democratic system on a fundamental level.

Does this mean that the system could not recover if all of the Jan. 6 defendants walked or if Trump (or a copycat) and his allies illegally canceled a future presidential election?

Not necessarily. But their actions are clearly a threat to our basic democratic bargain, in which electoral losses are accepted as binding and losers live to fight another day, and a hard line is drawn to political violence.

On that last point, in fact, some scholars of political collapse worry that MAGA’s takeover of large swaths of the GOP really portends future political violence and instability. Not necessarily a civil war, but higher levels of violence aimed at influencing or challenging political outcomes.

And so, at a fundamental level, Biden’s core claim — that Trump and swathes of the GOP allied with him pose a fundamental threat — is absolutely reasonable.

Here is the most fundamental point of all. Despite the cries that Biden’s speech

and run MAGA like he said this:

There are far more Americans, far more Americans of all backgrounds and creeds, who reject MAGA’s extreme ideology than those who accept it. And friends, it is in our power, it is in our hands, yours and mine, to stop the assault on American democracy.

This is a call for Americans to defeat Trump and MAGA in a way that is peaceful and democratic. Biden says that an anti-MAGA majority exists in this country which can and must mobilize to stabilize our system.

And the idea that this majority is there and exists for the sake of awakening – well, that’s what enrages Republicans the most.
