The Calgary Fire Department fought two fires at opposite ends of the city Thursday night.

Crews were first called to the 2300 block of Crestwood Rd around 6:40 p.m. Once there, firefighters noticed a large volume of smoke and flames coming from a one-story house and residents were already outside, trying to put out the fire with garden hoses.

Firefighters attacked the fire from the outside, then moved inside to any other hot spots and quickly brought the fire under control. In the meantime, two family cats have been rescued from the house.

Two of the four people in the home were assessed for smoke inhalation and a woman was taken to hospital. A neighbor was also assessed for smoke inhalation and a firefighter was also assessed for minor injuries while fighting the blaze.

Calgary police remained at the scene to assist with traffic control. Enmax was also called in to assess and isolate damaged power lines.

In a press release, CFD said the damage to the home was extensive and the cause is being investigated.

Beltline apartment fire

Calgary firefighters were then called to the Sky Gate Tower in the 1000 block of 16 Avenue SW for fire reports. Around 8:50 p.m., crews arrived to notice flames coming from a ninth-floor balcony.

The building was evacuated when he arrived and firefighters rushed to the ninth floor and forced their way into the affected suite. Calgary Fire said the fire was contained to the balcony and quickly extinguished. Due to the size of the building, 11 engines and more than 25 firefighters were on the scene.

Residents were able to re-enter the building soon after, as the damage was limited to the balcony only. A fire investigator remained at the scene Thursday evening.
