China could use US oil to support Ukraine invasion, GOP lawmakers say

A group of GOP lawmakers have expressed concerns that US oil supplied to Unipec America, a company operated by the Chinese Communist Party, could be used by China to support the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

To ensure the Biden administration properly handles the sale of critical assets, lawmakers are again asking Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm to provide an immediate briefing and all documents and communications related to the sale of SPR.

“We continue to monitor the depletion of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) by the US Department of Energy. According to the DOE, the Biden administration recently sold nearly one million barrels of SPR oil to Unipec America, a subsidiary of Sinopec, a company owned by the Chinese Communist Party,” said James Comer, a member of the Committee of the House on Oversight and Reform, and Nancy Mace, Member of the Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.

“In addition to concerns about Hunter Biden, the president’s son, receiving money from the deal, the decision to sell to Unipec is troubling as Chinese companies support the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In order to assure the American people that the Biden administration is properly handling the sale of critical SPR assets and not supporting Russia by supplying oil to China, we request a briefing and documents related to this matter,” wrote the Republican lawmakers.

Mace and Comer, in the letter to the Department of Energy, requested a briefing on the recent sale of oil from the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).

Over $100 million worth of US oil has been sold to a Chinese state oil company. Recent research shows that Chinese companies helped support Russia’s horrific invasion of Ukraine, which is deeply concerning, they said.
