Google’s artificial intelligence division, DeepMind, taught AI humanoids how to work as a team in order to play soccer together.

Researchers trained a physically simulated AI to play two-on-two games, in an experiment that aimed to advance coordination between AI systems and provide new pathways to building artificial general intelligence ( AGI) which is of a similar level to that of a human.

“Our agents learned skills such as agile locomotion, passing and division of labor, as demonstrated by a range of statistics,” DeepMind researchers wrote in a blog post.

“Players exhibit both agile high-frequency motor control and long-term decision-making that involves anticipating the behaviors of their teammates, leading to coordinated team play.”

Players learned how to jostle for the ball, run balls to their teammate, and chip and tackle their opponents.

Separate simulations saw the humanoids learn to perform complex tasks with their arms, such as throwing and catching a ball.

Using their discoveries in the digital realm, DeepMind researchers were able to instruct humanoid robots and dogs to walk and dribble a soccer ball in a “natural and robust way”.

The research was detailed in a study titled “From Motor Control to Team Play in Simulated Humanoid Football,” published in the journal Scientific robotics Wednesday.

It describes how the AI was trained to mimic football-specific skills and was rewarded if the moves led to a performance boost, such as a goal. The task required motor control, long-range decision-making, and the ability to coordinate with other AIs.

“We optimized teams of agents to play simulated football via reinforcement learning, constraining the solution space to that of plausible movements learned using human motion capture data,” the study says. .

“The result is a team of coordinated humanoid football players who exhibit complex behavior at different scales, quantified by a range of analyzes and statistics.”
