Buenos Aires [Argentina]September 2 (ANI): Argentine police arrested a man on Thursday evening for pointing a gun at Vice President and former President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner outside her home in Buenos Aires, local media reported.
According to the police report, the alleged attacker is a 35-year-old Brazilian national, identified as Fernando Andres Sabag Montiel, Sputnik reported.
Viral footage of the incident revealed the accused approached the vice president pointing a gun inches from her head and appeared to attempt to shoot, but the gun did not fire. The Vice President’s life is not believed to be in danger.
The weapon used by the assailant was found “a few meters from the scene”, according to the police report.
In addition, the police confirmed that the judicial intervention squad had moved to the area. The motives of the attacker and details of the incident are unclear at this time as police are investigating.
Montiel is said to have a history of carrying illegal weapons, and police arrested him in 2021 for having a knife, Sputnik reported.
Argentine President Alberto Fernandez is expected to make a televised address to the nation shortly.
On Monday, Argentina’s security minister said he would extend Kirchner’s security to his home as well after a clash broke out outside his home as a prosecutor sought a 12-year prison sentence for Kirchner, accused of a corruption case.
On one side, people hoisted banners accusing her of being a ‘thief’ and banged pots and pans, while on the other, her supporters sang political chants and jumped for joy in sign loud support.
Police used tear gas and batons to disperse supporters of Fernandez de Kirchner, in what his allies denounced as a spectacle of excessive violence. A deputy from the ruling Frente de Todos coalition was briefly arrested.
It comes after a lead prosecutor in the case asked a federal court in Buenos Aires to sentence Fernandez de Kirchner to 12 years in prison and bar him from holding public office for the rest of his life.
Fernandez de Kirchner is one of 13 people charged in the so-called “Causa Vialidad”, which focuses on the awarding of public works contracts in the Patagonian province of Santa Cruz, where she and her late husband, the former President Nestor Kirchner, cemented their political careers.
The case covers a 12-year period, beginning in the early 2000s, during which 51 contracts were awarded to companies owned by Lazaro Baez, a businessman friend and associate of the Kirchners.
Baez, who was convicted last year of money laundering, went from bank clerk to founder of a construction company in the days before Nestor Kirchner took office in 2003.
Kirchner is charged with “aggravated unlawful association by leadership” and “aggravated fraudulent administration”.
However, she denied the charges and said she was the victim of judicial and political persecution, Al Jazeera reported.
His legal team said the premise of the charges against Kirchner was absurd, noting in particular that public works contracts go through Congress, so any allegations of wrongful association, they argued, would then have to extend to this legislative body, Al Jazeera reported. (ANI)
