Former President Donald Trump has added a new attorney to the pool of attorneys representing him as he faces scrutiny over classified documents recovered by the FBI from his Florida residence, Mar-A-Lago.

Former Florida Solicitor General Chris Kise recently joined Trump’s legal team. He filed a notice in court which he signed as co-counsel in the Trump case apply for a special master’s degree to examine the documents seized at Mar-a-Lago. This case is being heard by Federal Judge Aileen Cannon.

The FBI search warrant, unsealed in August, revealed that Trump was being investigated for a potential violation of three criminal statutes: deleting or destroying records, obstructing an investigation, and a provision of the espionage relating to the collection, transmission or loss of defense information.

Until Monday, Kise was a partner at Foley & Lardner.

“Foley & Lardner LLP can confirm that Christopher M. Kise, a former partner in our Tallahassee office, has retired from the business,” a Foley & Lardner spokesperson said in a statement sent to CBS News. Kise’s name has been removed from the company’s website.

NBC News was first to report that Kise was joining Trump’s team. The former president has so far recruited five attorneys who can appear in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida beginning Thursday at a West Palm Beach hearing on Trump’s request for a master’s degree. special.

Other members of his legal team are Christina Bobb, Lindsey Halligan, Jim Trusty and Evan Corcoran. Bobb is a former One America News Network host and also served as Executive Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), handling written communications for and by the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security. Prior to DHS, she spent several years as a civil litigation attorney and also served as a judge advocate for the United States Marine Corps, according to a biography on the DHS website. Bobb is the only member of his legal team not currently representing him in court.

Halligan is a Florida-based attorney who, according to a Florida Attorney Database, litigates insurance claims on residential and commercial properties.

Bobb and Halligan arrived at the scene on the morning of August 8 when the FBI searched Mar-A-Lago, according to Halligan.

Trusty served as a federal prosecutor for nearly 30 years and served as head of the organized crime section at the Justice Department for seven years, according to firm Ifrah Law where he is now a lawyer whose area of practice is white-collar litigation .

Corcoran was a federal prosecutor and is now a criminal defense attorney. He recently defended Trump aide Steve Bannon on criminal contempt charges stemming from Bannon’s refusal to comply with a subpoena from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol. A jury convicted Bannon of the two charges of criminal contempt in July.

Trump has hired a number of attorneys over the past six years to represent him in several different cases. Lawyers who have worked with Trump include Rudy Giuliani, Jay Sekulow, Harvard law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz, former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi and former independent attorney Ken Starr.

There have been legal risks associated with being the former president’s attorney, notes Ryan Goodman, a law professor at New York University.

“Some of the attorneys might very well want to stay away from Trump because they’ve seen in the past how his attorneys can be directly involved in the criminal investigation,” Goodman said.

According to the Justice Department’s response to the special main case, a “record keeper” in Trump’s post-presidential office, who CBS News reported is a lawyer for Trump, provided federal law enforcement with a certification letter signed on June 3 stating that a “diligent search” had been made of the boxes brought from the White House to Mar-a-Lago and that “all documents” answering at the grand jury’s subpoena had been returned over.

Two months later, on August 8, the FBI seized 11 sets of classified documents, some of which were marked “top secret.” The Justice Department’s most recent Special Main Case filing included a Photo showing a number of covers of classified documents recovered from a container in Trump’s office during the Aug. 8 search of Mar-a-Lago.

About three weeks ago, Dershowitz told Newsmax host Sean Spicer that some attorneys had contacted him to say they wouldn’t be representing Trump for fear of being “cancelled.”

Guiliani is currently the target of a criminal investigation into Trump’s attempts to nullify Georgia’s 2020 election results.
