Officials at the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base, Ibaka, Mbo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State arrested three suspects and seized a wooden boat containing approximately 4,750 liters of oil suspected of being Premium Motor Spirit.

Base Operations Officer Lt. Daniel Onyemaeze who disclosed this to Ibaka on Thursday while handing over the suspects to Nigerian Security and Civil Defense officials said the suspects were arrested on Monday August 29 along the waterways of Effiat during a routine check by officials.

He explained that the seized products were concealed in 19 drums, adding that each drum contained 250 liters of PMS.

He said: “This morning, FOB Ibaka hands over 19 drums of product suspected to be PMS to the NSCDC. They were intercepted by our FOB Ibaka staff during our routine waterway patrol.

“This is consistent with the Chief of the Naval Staff’s mandate to reduce illegal and criminal activity in the waterways.”

Onyemaeze warned perpetrators of illegal bunkering, oil theft and other criminal activities to refrain from such nefarious activities or risk arrest.

Receiving the suspects and exhibits, NSCDC Superintendent Candidi Odo commended the Navy’s efforts to reduce illegality to a bare minimum on the waterways.

“We express our gratitude to the Nigerian Navy, FOB Ibaka for the synergy that has existed between the Navy and the NSCDC. I urge the Navy to continue their good work and we have promised them that we will never fail in pursuing the investigations and the persecution of the culprits,” Odo said.
