11 bit studios has released a statement indicating that it will no longer issue Steam keys to curators.

The developer, known for This War of Mine and Frostpunk, will follow this rule from today, following the recent awareness of key scammers posing as curators.

In its statement, the studio said the decision was made based on its own experiences and those of other developers.

“Based on our experiences and those of other developers, most requests come from fake accounts used to collect and resell keys,” the statement said. 11 Bit also said they weren’t worried about losing criticism from conservatives because they “don’t seem to provide value to the community.”

In a follow-up comment, the studio noted Valve’s awareness of the issue with how curation currently works on Steam and expressed hope that Valve will address it soon. Valve banned 20 conservative groups earlier this week for being involved in key resale scams.

The groups that Valve banned were exposed by indie developer Cowcat Games in a sort of sting operation.

11-bit experiences are not isolated within the developer community, as Cowcat Games has demonstrated. Indie developer Tomi Toikka shared his experience with key scammers in the past in a response to the original 11-bit claim.

Unfortunately, indie developers say they have to impose restrictions like this to keep scammers out, because the protections provided by the platform and the Steam Curator program aren’t enough to stop people who want to profit from their work.
