ERNE RIVER has to do with grades, but it’s better in the proving ground and goes very well fresh, so it may be able to cause a shock. He was impressive in winning his first two starts on fences at Doncaster and Wetherby, and will relish the return to the proving ground. He is undefeated after a break of two months or more, by the way.

With Do Your Job running Friday and Hitman’s favorite engagement being in Haydock, it should go to THE BUSY MANwho had such a productive campaign as a novice last year, and can help start the season for Venetia Williams.

This is COULD I first attempt to stay, but he pulled 24 lengths clear of Good Risk At All in a 1 of 2½m year at Aintree last time out and looked like he needed an even tougher test, which he gets here. His stable has been in great shape for the past few weeks, and this Fame And Glory half-brother to National Hunt Chase winner Stattler is completely unexposed and got an obstacle test. He won despite being unappreciated on his running arc, and also after a long break in last season’s comeback, so his absence since April is of no concern at all.

Let’s hope the ground doesn’t dry out enough to give Nicky Henderson doubts about the race CONSTITUTION HILL, who seems to have this race at his mercy. His 22-length loss to Jonbon had to be seen to be believed, and Henderson is unable to contain his enthusiasm for the unbeaten hurdler.

It would be wonderful to think that the great Bristol veteran of Mai could come back to record a fourth victory in this event, and the soft ground should ensure him a much better run now than a year ago, but the real bogey is SEE YOU LATER who is a better hunter than the gallant gray has ever been, and who should be able to win back-to-back races despite slight concerns on the field.

I remain convinced that START HILL is a high-class two-mile hunter in the making, and he was truly impressive despite the small margin to Newton Abbot on his return, beating next winner Datsalrightgino by three parts of lengths after being heavily relieved when clear after the last. Newton Abbot’s fences require a few jumps and he was perfect on foot, when the margin of victory could have been ten lengths had he been knocked out.

Houston, Texas has been the most progressive this season and impressed with the way he traveled as he conjured up a Carlisle hat-trick on his last start. He took a long time to blossom, but Nicky Richards is a patient man and gave Dylan Thomas’ son plenty of time to find himself. He’s been doing it in no uncertain terms lately, feeling like he’s going to do even better as his stamina wears thin.
