Swiss international Denis Zakaria has joined Chelsea on loan from Juventus for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign, with a permanent transfer option at the end of the season.
The 25-year-old is a strong and energetic midfielder who is robust in the tackle and a good passer on the ball. Zakaria rose to prominence in the Bundesliga with Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he was most often deployed in a defensive midfield role. He can also play more forward or in the center of defense.
Moving on to Stamford Bridge, Zakaria said: “I want to say hello to all Chelsea fans. I am very happy and proud to be a Blue and look forward to seeing you at Stamford Bridge soon.
Standing 6ft 3in, Zakaria has the mobility to cover a lot of ground, regularly topping running stats during his time at Gladbach. He scores goals, has played 40 times for the Swiss national team, including at the 2018 World Cup and last year’s Euros, and has appeared in European competitions for Young Boys, Borussia and La Juve.
Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly said: “Denis is a talented midfielder with a lot of quality and skill. He will add depth and range to our squad this season, and we can’t wait to see him play in Chelsea blue.
Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, co-owners, added, “Denis brings high-level, international experience, and his blend of toughness and great distribution will be an asset to our team. We are happy to have him with us and to welcome him to London.
