Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: striker joins Chelsea from Barcelona as Marcos Alonso heads the other way

Chelsea have signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona in a deal that sees left-back Marcos Alonso go the other way.

Chelsea are expected to pay around £10million plus Alonso for the former Arsenal striker.

Aubameyang flew to the UK on Thursday afternoon for his medical and to finalize the deal, which was agreed after the 11pm deadline, but Chelsea tabled the deal sheet to let more time.

Aubameyang suffered a minor jaw fracture in an attack on his home at the weekend. The Gabon striker, who is expected to be out for three weeks, will be able to return to non-contact training next week.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been spotted in London ahead of a deadline day move from Barcelona to Chelsea.

Aubameyang moved to Barcelona on a free transfer from Arsenal in January. Although Thomas Tuchel was hesitant to talk about Aubameyang in public, he was keen to work again with a player who scored 79 goals for him in two seasons at Borussia Dortmund.

Before securing the deal with Aubameyang, Tuchel had already spent £268m this summer on players including Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Chelsea also finalized a loan deal for Juventus midfielder Denis Zakaria on deadline day, but a £43m bid for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez fell through to a concluded agreement.

Chelsea need instant impact

Sky Sports Adam Smith:

“Some players remain your players because you were very, very close – and Auba is one of those players,” Tuchel told reporters last month, validating reports that Chelsea were considering a move for their former striker.

While the Gabon international grabbed the headlines for the right and wrong reasons during his time at Arsenal, Aubameyang simply produced goals at Borussia Dortmund under Tuchel – with 56 Bundesliga goals in 63 appearances over two campaigns.

That partnership ended when Dortmund sacked Tuchel at the end of the 2016/17 season and Aubameyang joined Arsenal in the 2018 winter window for a club record £60m – hitting the floor with 10 goals in the league in just 12 starts.

However, his goal ratio gradually dropped over four campaigns and culminated in his dismissal as club captain on disciplinary grounds before leaving the club by mutual consent six weeks later and joining Barcelona on a free transfer.

In true Jekyll and Hyde form, the flamboyant forward broke through La Liga blocks again, averaging nearly a goal a game last season – helping the club move from fifth in the league to second place behind rivals Real Madrid.

However, Barca have been busy in the transfer market this summer amid ongoing controversy surrounding their rush to raise capital and record income including former Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

Barcelona have opened the door for Aubameynang to leave the club after just seven months at Camp Nou – earning around £10.3m and acquiring Alonso in the process – and Aubameyang’s former mentor has come calling. But why?
