GEORGE DOBELL: England will announce a 19-man squad for the Pakistan tour and the T20 World Cup which follows on Friday September 2

England are set to name a 19-man squad for Pakistan’s T20 tour as they face loss of fitness and form for several key players.

England will announce the group for this tour and the T20 World Cup which follows on Friday September 2.

While the plan will have been to build for the World Cup in the seven-match series in Pakistan, England instead find themselves forced to care for a large number of players over the coming weeks as they recover from the demands. of a long season.

On the plus side, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes are set to return to the squad after undergoing surgery in recent months. And while Tymal Mills, who has had toe surgery, is set to miss the Pakistan tour, he remains hopeful of being named as a reserve World Cup squad.

Luke Wood, who had an impressive campaign in The Hundred, should be included alongside Richard Gleeson, Sam Curran and Reece Topley. Chris Jordan, who is also suffering from an injury, should have recovered enough to be included.

Wood, the 27-year-old left-arm tailor, has already been named in the England squads but has yet to make his international debut. He played particularly well – and particularly fast – with the new ball from The Hundred.

There’s unlikely to be a place for Jason Roy, though. He’s endured a period of miserable form in recent months (he had an average of 12.66 in the T20Is this summer with a strike rate that has dropped to 77.55) and looks set to miss Will Jacks in the Pakistani team accordingly.

There is also no room for Alex Hales. He’s had a decent Hundred campaign and is an extremely experienced player. But it looks like England are reluctant to come back to him. Now 33, his last chance may have passed.

Phil Salt is also sure to be included, although Dawid Malan and Jos Buttler are currently set to open the T20 World Cup, followed by Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow.

England also have injury concerns for Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone, although both are expected to be named in the squad, while Stokes and Bairstow are expected to be rested for at least part of Pakistan’s series. In their absence, Moeen Ali is expected to be captain at the start of the Pakistan tour.

The World Cup squad will consist of 15 players and three traveling substitutes.
