RAIL users are reminded to travel by train only if necessary on Saturdays.

A new train drivers’ strike called by the train drivers’ union Aslef will lead to a significant reduction in train service across the country that day.

Passengers are advised to plan ahead and check before traveling throughout the weekend.

Running trains will start later on Saturday morning and finish much earlier than usual – with services generally running between 7.30am and 6.30pm on the day of the strike.

Passengers are also advised if traveling on Sunday morning to check with operators and consider starting their journey later as there is likely to be disruption when workers return to work.

Those with a monthly or longer pass or who have activated travel days on a flexi pass who choose not to travel on November 26 can claim compensation for those days through the delay refund system.

Train users who are due to travel on Saturday and who have already purchased their tickets should check with the train company before their journey to find out if their journey is affected.

If your local operator is affected by industrial action, you should consult journey planners with National Rail or the operators’ websites for alternative route options.

Daniel Mann, director of industrial operations at Rail Delivery Group, said: “The Aslef strike brings more uncertainty to passengers and businesses by disrupting their weekend plans.

“While we are doing everything possible to minimize disruption, if you are traveling on the affected routes, please plan ahead and check the latest travel advice on national rail investigations.

“Passengers with advance tickets, off-peak or at any time affected by the strike can use their ticket either the day before the date indicated on the ticket or until Tuesday, November 29 inclusive.

“Passengers can also change their tickets to travel on another date or get a refund if their train is canceled or postponed.”
