A man and woman have been arrested following a police chase involving a helicopter which ended in Wesoughton overnight.

The couple were arrested on suspicion of stealing a white Audi TT at knifepoint after a 20-minute chase in which units from the police’s Special Operations Traffic Unit Greater Manchester (GMP) and Wigan Division met.

The chase took place along Tyldesley Road, Atherton, and ended in Westhougton at The Fairways, located in the new Royal Bowland Park development.

Residents and onlookers reported a helicopter overhead.

A GMP spokesman said: “Around midnight last night, Saturday 19th November, officers from GMP’s Special Operations Traffic Unit and Wigan Division came together in a 20 minute chase of an Audi TT suspected stolen along Tyldesley Road in Atherton.

“The pursuit resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman on suspicion of stealing the vehicle earlier in the evening at knifepoint.

“Upon inspection, the man was revealed to be a disqualified driver, and he was further arrested on suspicion of multiple road traffic offenses and robbery.

“Both remain in custody for questioning.”
