Wayne Rooney said he was “intrigued” to see how Gareth Southgate would use Trent Alexander-Arnold at this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.

Alexander-Arnold was eventually selected by Southgate. With Reece James out and Kyle Walker returning from a long-term injury, Trent was given the nod. This, despite some spotty performances in a Liverpool shirt this season.

Rooney likes Alexander-Arnold

Rooney, writing in his column for The Times today, thinks Alexander-Arnold should start for England. The former England striker admits he’s so interested in how the Three Lions are using him.

“I’m really intrigued to see what Gareth Southgate is doing with Trent Alexander-Arnold. Personally, I would start it. I think Harry Maguire will have another great tournament. He has performed better for England than for United – I think he would agree – and over the last two years United have struggled,” Rooney said.
