A CONTROLLING boyfriend isolated his partner from his family before continuing to continually upset her and then carrying out a nasty assault.

Phillip Chilcott subjected his victim to years of domestic violence that culminated in putting his hands around her throat, threatening to kill her and headbutting her.

The victim thought she was going to die after being unable to breathe at one point and was left with a bleeding nose, a cut lip and bruises on her neck.

Chilcott was arrested following this attack in July.

Christopher Evans, prosecuting, said: “The relationship was very up and down and there were jealousy issues.

“The defendant would be verbally abusive and would make snide comments saying, ‘Your nose is too big’ and making comments about his appearance.”

Chilcott would show up uninvited when her partner was out, such as at a women-only hot tub party and live music event.

The abuse gradually worsened over time.

“The defendant slapped her in the face,” the prosecutor said.

“She said she would receive daily abuse.

“He was trashing her house and sending her pictures of the damage.”

Mr Evans read the victim’s statement in which she said: ‘I was a wild child and loved life.

“When I met him when I was 17, I thought I was blessed.”

But, Cardiff Crown Court heard, that quickly changed.

“I lost all self-confidence because of him,” she said.

“He isolated me from my friends and family to the point where I argued with my mum, dad and uncle.

“He was constantly texting me and asking where I was.

“Before, I was confident in my appearance, but that was soon to change.

“He would put me down.

She added: “I feel like I will never recover from the damage this man has done to me.

“I hate him and everything he’s done.”

Chilcott admitted controlling and coercive behavior, assault causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage against his former girlfriend.

The offenses took place between 2015 and 2022.

The accused, 35, from Penallta Way, Gelli-Haf, Pontllanfraith, Blackwood, had previous convictions for violence, harassment, drug possession and criminal damage.

Hashim Salmman, representing Chilcott, asked the court to consider his client’s guilty pleas and that he had been assessed as low risk to re-offend.

His lawyer added that the defendant had abused cocaine and suffered from PTSD after suffering a brain injury in a road accident.

The judge, Recorder IWL Jones, told Chilcott: “Your offenses had a very significant effect on the victim.

“You should be ashamed of the way you behaved.”

The accused was jailed for two years and served an indefinite restraining order not to contact the woman.
