A CROSSGATES van driver who killed a cyclist in an early morning crash has escaped from court.

David McGregor, 48, crashed into William Crawford on the A913 Cupar-Newburgh road in Fife on September 26, 2019.

The 54-year-old victim tragically died two days later in hospital.

McGregor was sentenced yesterday (Thursday) by the High Court in Glasgow.

He had already been convicted after a trial in Dundee of causing death by careless driving.

The prosecution said McGregor failed to maintain proper observations and react appropriately to other people on the road.

As a result, he collided with mountain biker Mr. Crawford, who was so badly injured he never recovered.

Judge Gillian Wade KC did not jail McGregor yesterday and instead told him to do 200 hours of unpaid work as part of a community reimbursement order.

She said: “This has been a tragic case for all involved, especially the family of William Crawford who have suffered his loss.

“I’m willing to accept that the guilt was of a lower level and that I can deal with you through a non-custodial sentence.”

McGregor, of Crossgates, must complete a period of unpaid work within 12 months.

He was also banned from driving for two years.

John Scullion KC, defending, told the court: “There is no allegation of excessive speeding.

“He stopped at the scene and contacted the emergency services. He showed genuine remorse.”
