Twitter announced that it has started testing an Edit Tweet feature that will soon be available to a select few trial users.

The feature has been requested by many users of the social media app over the past few years, and earlier this year Twitter announced they were working on it.

In an explanation of how it works, Twitter said tweets will be able to be edited “multiple times” within a 30-minute period of posting.

After that, edited tweets will appear with an icon, timestamp, and label to clearly indicate that the original version has been edited.

Users will be able to click through to view a tweet’s edit history, which will show previous versions.

Twitter will test the feature with a very small number of users initially (PA)

Critics of the potential feature have previously said they fear users could use such a tool to spread misinformation.

In a blog post announcing the move, Twitter said, “Like any new feature, we are intentionally testing Edit Tweet with a smaller group to help us incorporate feedback while identifying and fixing potential issues. This includes how people might abuse the feature. You can never be too careful.

“Later this month, we will extend access to Edit Tweet to Twitter Blue subscribers.

“As part of their subscription, they get early access to features and help us test them before they come to Twitter. The test will initially be localized in a single country and will expand as we learn and observe how people use Edit Tweet.

“We’ll also pay close attention to how the feature impacts how people read, write and interact with tweets.”

The tool will be available to Twitter Blue subscribers later this month, a service available in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand that gives users additional features not available to the general public.
