A GROUP of young people broke into an abandoned pub and threw objects onto the street just a day before a suspected arson attack at the same building, police said.

An investigation has been opened into the incident which happened around 4pm last Saturday at the Bridge Tavern in Southampton.

The group of youths reportedly broke into the site, which has been empty for 15 years, and threw pieces of wood into Coxford Road.

The next day, firefighters were called to two fires on the ground floor of the old pub.

These would have been put in place on purpose.

Acting Inspector Rob Morant of the Southampton West Neighborhoods Policing Team said: ‘We are well aware of the long-term issues at the Bridge Tavern site, including the fire on Sunday, and the impact it has on local residents.

“We have since conducted on-site investigations and are working with relevant partners to ensure the building is properly barricaded again.

“Please continue to report anti-social behavior associated with this site to us so that we can build a stronger intelligence picture and act in the most effective manner with the resources available to us.”

The incidents come as residents say the building has become an “anti-social behavior zone”.

The building is currently the subject of plans for 15 apartments, with the site of the original pub due to be demolished if approved by the council.

Shirley council leader and councilor Satvir Kaur said after the fire that people in that area were “rightly fed up”.

She went on to say that the council had previously called for barriers to prevent further incidents at the pub.
