Popeyes will open a drive-thru at Boldon Leisure Park near Cineworld

A new Popeyes drive-thru restaurant is set to land in South Tyneside as part of proposals submitted to the boroughs’ planning chiefs.

The famous American chicken restaurant chain made its UK debut last year and recently opened its first North East branch in Gateshead’s Metrocentre.

As part of its expansion plans, an application has been submitted to South Tyneside Council’s planning department to redevelop a plot of land at Boldon Leisure Park.

If approved by council planning officials, Popeyes would operate from a new building directly adjacent to Cineworld.

The drive-thru location would reflect existing planning permission for a restaurant at the same location, which was never brought forward.

New plans aim to transform an area of “underused land” at the southwest corner of the existing Cineworld into the wider entertainment complex.

Floor plans confirm that the Popeyes Restaurant would have an outdoor seating area, an indoor customer area for approximately 68 seats and a customer restroom.

Additionally, a new vehicle access would be created to service the restaurant with an on-site one-way system directing traffic to the roundabout near the Asda Boldon service station.

A planning design and access statement submitted on behalf of the applicant LS Leisure Parks Investments Limited provides further details of the development.

This includes the use of “composite cladding panels, cinder blocks and red bricks” in the design of the building to “provide symmetry” with the existing Nandos Restaurant nearby.

The applicants also say the new proposal would bring “significant social and economic benefits” with jobs created directly by the restaurant and during construction.

The supporting statement adds: ‘The development would result in the creation of new jobs which would be available in a range of occupations and would bring significant economic benefit to the area.

“Further employment opportunities will also be generated during the construction phase and, where appropriate, local labor will have the opportunity to be involved.

“As previously confirmed in this statement, the drive-thru would be operated by Popeyes, an American multinational chain which has recently expanded into the UK market and has ambitions for further growth, including in the North East of England. .

“The proposal will support the company’s growth in the UK market.”

Over the past few years Boldon Leisure Park has welcomed a number of new businesses, including the Canadian restaurant chain Tim Hortons and the ‘Gourmet 4’ food hall.

Plans are also underway for a new drive-through restaurant on a section of the Asda car park adjacent to the leisure park.

A decision on the Popeyes drive-thru restaurant plan will be made once a council consultation period is complete.
