The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Solent is set to retire to care for her elderly mother.

Professor Karen Stanton has announced that she will retire early next year.

She became the university’s first female vice-chancellor when she joined in February 2020.

She worked in higher education for 25 years, eight of them as Vice-Chancellor of York St John’s University.

While at Solent, she launched the university’s 2025 strategy and civic charter, created business advisory boards, opened two new research centers – for British Maritime Self-Reliance and Marine Sustainability – and contributed to the partnership university strategy with Saints FC.

Professor Stanton says she will pursue her passion for the education sector by volunteering to ensure girls around the world have access to education.

Phil Cotton, Professional Vice-Chancellor, Chairman of the Solent Board of Governors, said: ‘We would like to thank Professor Stanton for all she has done for the university.

“She has shown exceptional leadership during extraordinary times – navigating the University through the challenges of the pandemic, Brexit and a rapidly changing industry.

“She has been a superb Vice-Chancellor and will be greatly missed, but her contributions, vision and innovations have provided a solid foundation from which Solent can continue its commitment to educating students and sea cadets from a broad socio-economic background, and produce future-ready graduates – equipped with the skills to benefit the city, region and beyond.
