NEW AND IMPROVED: App updates include new stories, videos and an audio-visual vocabulary trainer

Essex County Council (ECC) encourages children and their parents and guardians to explore the wealth of resources on offer as part of Essex Year of Reading.
Perfect for beginners and older kids alike, the app features resources to help parents and guardians, plus exciting new titles for kids.
The Essex Year of Reading campaign has been set up to help every child and young person in Essex whose education has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic to be able to read at their age or older.
The latest app updates include “Let’s Get Started!” guide for parents and guardians. This includes a section on modeling reading and building resilience, a video on how to use the app, a link to reading opportunities in Ukrainian, and signposts to helpful services around the country. ‘Essex.
New content has also been added, including “Adventures in Science” titles and ‘Learning English’ – help children learn the basics of English with an audio-visual vocabulary trainer.
App users will be able to access the top 10 tips to help children read or learn more about Talk, Listen, Cuddle, an initiative that helps families support children’s communication skills.
Parents and guardians can also take advantage of recommended short reads for adults written by best-selling authors; ‘ClearVision’, a library of children’s books in print and Braille; and a range of books for primary and secondary school children who have difficulty reading.
Councilor Tony Ball, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Excellence in Education, Lifelong Learning and Employability, said: ‘We are delighted to offer resources even more useful on the Essex Year of Reading app that will allow parents and guardians to continue to help their children read.
“Reading is not only enjoyable, it can also help children and young people access other areas of education. Our goal throughout this campaign is to provide helpful reading suggestions, make reading inclusive for every child, and organize fun events and initiatives to get everyone excited about reading and the opportunities she can present.
App users can find out about upcoming Essex Year of Reading events, author visits to libraries, workshops, competitions and other fun initiatives, and can find hours, locations and mobile libraries of their nearest libraries.
