Chemotherapy unit moved to Kidderminster due to Covid-19 will move back to Redditch

The Garden Suite, which offers a range of outpatient chemotherapy treatments, was moved to a separate building at Kidderminster Hospital in 2020.

He was moved in response to the Covid-19 outbreak but will return home to Alexandra Hospital, Redditch, potentially by the end of next month.

Matthew Hopkins, chief executive of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Alexandra and Kidderminster hospitals, as well as Worcestershire Royal, said: “Our priority must be the safety of our patients, but we are also keen to provide care as close from home as possible for all of our patients.

“We have always said that Garden Suite’s move to Kidderminster was temporary and as soon as we could identify a suitable location we would move it back to the Alexandra.

“We heard from a number of patients, staff and local stakeholders telling us how much they wanted us to return Garden Suite to the Alexandra, and by putting this plan into effect so quickly, we did exactly that. what we said we were going to do. do, while maintaining outpatient chemotherapy services in Kidderminster and Worcestershire Royal as well.

The unit was based in the Harvington area of ​​Kidderminster, part of the site run by the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care Trust – enabling the organization to increase the number of community offerings there to ease pressure from urgent Care.

Mr Hopkins added: “We are very grateful to our partners at the Health and Care Trust for allowing us to use Harvington Ward for the Garden Suite, but with pressure on our remaining urgent and urgent care services. high, the creation of additional community bed capacity will make a significant contribution to the joint effort Worcestershire health and care organizations are making to improve patient flow, reduce pressure on emergency services and ensure timely ambulance transfers.

And the suite will be housed in Alexandra Ward 1, which is currently used as an exit ward for patients waiting to return home from hospitalization. Work is underway regarding decoration work, with the remaining area being used as a redesigned dump room.

Chemotherapy services will also continue to be provided at the Royal Hospitals of Kidderminster and Worcestershire. Patients whose next appointments will be at the Garden Suite will be contacted directly.
