A man matching the exact description of art dealer Giuliano Ruffini, who is the alleged mastermind of a major fake Old Masters scandal, was arrested this morning in northern Italy, according to local media.
The Italian newspaper Stampa Reggiana reports that carabinieri in the town of Castelnovo Monti, not far from Ruffini’s residence in Reggio Emilia, had arrested a yet to be named “77-year-old art critic” who is wanted by French police for “fraud, money laundering and forgery of works of art”, according to an arrest warrant dated July 14, 2019. All of this information matches Ruffini and the arrest warrant against him.
“Having learned from the newspapers that he was wanted, the person concerned, through his lawyer, informed the commander of the Castelnovo Monti that he wished to surrender, which he did by presenting himself at the end of the morning to the local carabinieri,” the report said.
Last week The arts journal reported that authorities were looking for Ruffini and could not find him. His arrest warrant has been delayed by the Supreme Court until the outcome of tax proceedings against him. He had been cleared of tax evasion by the court. Ruffini has always maintained his innocence, asserting that the paintings were not falsified and that the attribution to the Old Masters was the responsibility of the experts, curators and dealers who authenticated them.
