Ahead of their next big space adventure in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord and his team will reunite this year in their own holiday special on Disney+. Although familiar team members like Rocket Racoon and Drax are expected to return, The holiday special Director James Gunn has confirmed that Zoe Saldana’s Gamora will not be returning in the upcoming small-screen project.
Despite this, the anticipation surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is still high, and it’s all because of Gunn’s continued hype on social media. The veteran MCU filmmaker claimed the special is “absolutely ridiculous,” describing it as “very light and bubbly and fun.”
In line with that, Gunn also teased that “one of the greatest MCU characters of all time” will debut in the special. Now, ahead of its release, an unexpected member of the Guardians franchise might make their presence felt in the project.

What impact will Yondu have on the Guardians holiday special? (The theory)
While the inclusion of Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is surprising, the presence of the character makes sense.
Since Michael Rooker’s Ravager is already dead during the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, The holiday special could feature the character in flashbacks, with Peter Quill reflecting on his time with his cosmic father figure. It also fits the spirit of Christmas due to its family remembrance.
However, the fact that the art indicates that Yondu is the one who ruined Christmas might hint that the Guardians’ holiday celebration might be kickstarted by the character’s memory of Quill.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has previously teased Yondu’s impact in the trio, noting that the Ravager might have removed some songs from the Zune. It’s possible that Yondu accidentally deleted some of the Christmas songs from the playlist, prompting Quill (along with the Guardians) to return to Earth to relive his Christmas experience.
Considering Quill is the only member who knows about the holidays, it would make sense for him to be the one to introduce Christmas to the Guardians, leading to a memorable reunion before their eventual clash with the High Evolutionary in Flight. 3.
Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is set to premiere on Disney+ later this year.
