Daniel Radcliffe says he felt it was “really important” to speak out beforehand against the alleged anti-trans remarks made by JK Rowling.

The Harry Potter author drew a lot of criticism in June 2020 following a series of tweets, in which critics accused her of being transphobic.

Rowling has strongly denied the charges.

Radcliffe said after meeting with members of the LGBT+ community that he “wanted them to know that not everyone in the franchise felt that way.”

In a recent interview with online publication IndieWire, the 33-year-old actor said many of the show’s young, gay and transgender fans were “hurt that day”.

“The reason I really, really felt like I needed to say something when I did is because, especially since Potter ended, I’ve met so many kids and young gay and trans people who identified a lot with Potter on that,” he said.

“And so seeing them hurt that day, I was like, I wanted them to know that not everyone in the franchise felt that way.

“And that was really important.”

In her original tweets, Rowling took issue with the title of an online article about ‘menstruating people’, writing: ‘I’m sure there was a word for these people. Someone help me. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud? »

Radcliffe, who became a world star for his portrayal of the wizarding schoolboy, commented at the time, saying, “transgender women are women.”

The actor shared a statement through LGBT+ suicide prevention charity The Trevor Project, saying that while Rowling was “unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken…as a human being, I feel compelled to say something right now.”

“It was really important because I’ve been working with the Trevor Project for over 10 years, and so I don’t think I could have looked in the mirror if I hadn’t said anything,” he said. at IndieWire.

Harry Potter star Ralph Fiennes defends JK Rowling over transgender comments

Following the ensuing row over her comments, Rowling said she was motivated to speak out about transgender issues because of her experience with domestic violence and sexual assault.

She also said she has since received threats from “hundreds of trans activists” – actions which have been condemned by the UK government.

Earlier this year, the author appeared on the Harry Potter 20th Reunion special, but only in archival music videos.

The HBO Max special, Back to Hogwarts, saw Radcliffe and fellow castmates Rupert Grint and Emma Watson reunite for the 20th anniversary of the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
