Adam Rickitt reveals he was scammed out of ‘tens of thousands of pounds’ in horror bank fraud

Adam Rickitt has revealed he was defrauded of “tens of thousands of pounds” by a cunning bank fraud.

The former Hollyoaks actor, 44, took to his Instagram on Friday to share that he had been the victim of an elaborate push payment scam, leaving him feeling “stupid” and embarrassed.

In the video, an emotional Adam recounted how he thought he was rather ‘savvy’ when it came to security, but admitted he had been completely duped by who he believed to be the fraud team at Barclay’s bank, remarking: “They knew EVERYTHING about me”.

The star admitted he could barely look his wife Katy in the eye after he was scammed and said that while some people might “laugh” at him, he wanted to warn others not to make his mistake.

A visibly emotional Adam said in the video, “So I have to admit something that is going to make me feel very stupid and embarrassed. I’m sure everyone is going to rip my schmeichel out, but I’m crossing my fingers that it doesn’t happen to anyone else, so here goes.

“I got scammed this week with a push payment scam.”

He continued, “I’m going to preface all of this by saying I know I’m not the brightest button in the whole repertoire, but I consider myself relatively savvy, but I just got completely ripped off.

“Basically what happened was that on Tuesday I received a text from Barclay’s bank saying that there had been suspicious activity on my account and that a member of the management team fraud investigation was going to call me to discuss it. “

“I got a phone call from an 0845 number and the guy Martin introduced himself to said, ‘I’m ringing from Barclay’s fraud department, asked the same security questions I always have.

“While I was on the phone with him on my laptop I even went to Barclay’s website to verify the number he was calling from and sure enough it was Barclay’s fraud number.”

Duped: In the video, an emotional Adam talked about how he thought he was pretty ‘knowledgeable’ about security, but admitted he was completely duped by who he believed to be the security team Barclay’s bank fraud, remarking: ‘They knew EVERYTHING about me’

Adam, who rose to prominence on Coronation Street, continued: ‘Long and short he explained to me that someone had walked into the Crewe branch and tried to withdraw money. He said the only way for this person to do that was to use my driver’s license, passport and signature.

“He was like ‘was that you? They kind of have your passport and driver’s license,” how petrified I was, it was impersonation. I called my wife, she checked and sure enough I had my passport and driver’s license at home. So I said I didn’t understand how it happened. He said “let me call you back”.

‘So he hung up the phone, I logged into my bank account, everything seemed fine. I got the phone call again and immediately borrowed a friend’s phone to try and call this number I found on the website and it went through.

‘He said what he thought happened was that it was a bit of an inside job, they had seen CCTV footage of a young boy, obviously not me, who had gone to the cashier , asked people to go ahead of them in the queue and when he arrived, he was not asked to hand over his passport.

“He said what concerned them was not just these two people, because of the size of the funds that were withdrawn, there should have been a notification.”

Fighting back tears as he continued to reminisce about his ordeal, Adam added: “Once again I got very nervous.”

“They said what they needed me to do was make a fake payment, and that would trigger a member of the fraud department. I said no, I didn’t want to.

“They said they should close the account so I went back to my account and sure enough the money was gone.”

‘I was completely scammed this week by scammers posing as @barclaysuk

“I was 100% sure it was the bank, they were helping me and I didn’t even transfer funds or give details. Alas the first one wasn’t true…they managed to duplicate everything I thought was safe…they knew EVERYTHING about me and my history with the bank…

“I know we all think we know what to do or how to react…but honestly I never experienced the stress it created during the scam…and now the embarrassment I feel.

“I can’t even begin to suggest how to protect you as I thought I was doing everything right… but please know there are people who know exactly how to play the system. Be careful x.”
