Maverick becomes the biggest-selling digital title ever released in the US

Top Gun: Maverick became the best-selling digital title in the United States in its very first week of availability on online services.

According to Variety, Paramount Home Entertainment revealed that the Tom Cruise-starring feature also entered the top 20 most popular first-week digital releases following its August 23 streaming debut.

The outlet also reported that the film reached No. 1 on services such as Amazon and Vudu.

Paramount, however, did not provide a specific amount to show how much Top Gun: Maverick earned numerically.

The film’s digital release also includes over 100 minutes of additional content, including several behind-the-scenes features.

Other elements included a featurette with Cruise that was filmed at the last Cannes Film Festival, as well as music videos from Lady Gaga and OneRepublic.

Top Gun: Maverick centered on Captain Pete Mitchell, tasked with forming a new team of pilots for a dangerous mission while facing the demons of his past.

In addition to Cruise, who reprized his role as Mitchell and served as one of the film’s producers, cast members included Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm, among many others.

Val Kilmer was also brought back to fulfill his former role as Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky.

Development of the now-released project took place over much of the mid-2010s.

Physical production of the feature film began in 2018 and continued until the following year.

Top Gun: Maverick was originally slated for release in 2019, although its release date has been pushed back several times.

The long-awaited film finally premiered at CinemaCon last April, and it was widely released in the United States on May 27.

The feature film’s international earnings brought its total gross to just over $1.4 billion.

The film is currently the highest-grossing film released this year and it reached the sixth highest-grossing film of all time.

Top Gun: Maverick is also the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise’s long career.
